Definition of Investment Gold

Investment gold is a physical form of gold purchased exclusively as a financial investment. Unlike gold jewelry, investment gold has standardized fineness, a recognizable form and proven origin, making it easier to sell and value later.

The Foreign Exchange Act and the National Bank of Serbia prescribe clear criteria for what is considered investment gold. It must have a fineness of at least 995/1000 and be in the form of coins or bars produced by recognized mints and refineries worldwide.

Gold Fineness – What Does 999.9 Mean?

Gold fineness indicates how much pure gold a unit contains. It is usually expressed in thousandths. For example, a fineness of 999.9/1000 means that in 1000 parts of the alloy, 999.9 parts consist of pure gold, while the remainder consists of traces of other metals that appear in the natural refining process.

For investment gold, it is important that the fineness is as high as possible. Bars offered by leading refineries such as Argor Heraeus, PAMP Suisse and Valcambi usually have a fineness of 999.9. Investment coins such as the Vienna Philharmonic, Krugerrand and Canadian Maple Leaf also use high fineness.

It is important to understand that fineness directly affects the price. Higher fineness means more pure gold for the same weight, which affects the buyback value. However, for most investors, the difference between 995 and 999.9 is not crucial if the product is from a verified manufacturer.

Types of Investment Gold

There are three basic types of investment gold on the market: gold bars, investment coins and ducats. Each type has its own advantages and purpose.

Gold bars are rectangular plates of gold of various weights. They are available from 1 gram to 1 kilogram. Larger bars (100 g, 250 g, 1 kg) have the lowest premium per gram of gold, making them the most efficient for larger investments.

Investment coins are coins produced by state mints. The best known are the Vienna Philharmonic (Austria), Krugerrand (South Africa), Canadian Maple Leaf (Canada), American Eagle (USA) and Chinese Panda (China). Each weighs one ounce (31.1 g), although smaller sizes are also available.

Ducats are historical gold coins with special significance in Serbia and the region. The four-ducat coin contains about 13.77 g of gold and is a popular choice due to its recognizability and liquidity on the local market.

Certificate and Original Packaging

Every serious investment gold product comes with a certificate confirming fineness, weight and authenticity. Refineries such as Argor Heraeus, PAMP Suisse and UBS stamp serial numbers on each bar and attach a certificate.

Original packaging and the certificate are key for later sale. Without them, the buyback price can be significantly lower, as the dealer must additionally verify authenticity. Always keep the certificate and original packaging in a safe place, separate from the gold itself.

LBMA (London Bullion Market Association) certified refineries are the gold standard in the industry. Products from these refineries are accepted worldwide without additional verification, which significantly facilitates international sales.

Investment Gold vs. Jewelry

The main difference between investment gold and gold jewelry is in the way the price is formed. For jewelry, the price consists of the fine value of the gold plus manufacturing costs, design, dealer margin and often VAT. Manufacturing costs can amount to up to 30-50% of the gold value.

Investment gold does not have manufacturing costs in the sense of artistic work. The premium above the market price of gold only covers the costs of minting or casting, certification, packaging and distribution. This premium is significantly lower, making investment gold a more efficient form of investment.

Additionally, investment gold in many countries has a more favorable tax treatment than jewelry. In the EU, the purchase of investment gold is exempt from VAT, which is not the case for jewelry. In Serbia, there are special regulations on the tax treatment of investment gold that make it more favorable for savings.

Investment Gold vs. Paper Gold

Paper gold includes ETFs, shares of mining companies, futures contracts and other financial instruments whose value tracks the price of gold. Although cheaper to buy, paper gold carries different types of risks.

With physical gold, you are the direct owner. There is no counterparty risk, broker bankruptcy risk or technical problems on the stock exchange. In crisis situations, when financial systems come under stress, physical gold remains under your direct control.

Paper instruments are suitable for traders who want to quickly profit from price movements. Physical gold is intended for long-term investors who want to protect their assets from inflation, currency risks and geopolitical instability.

Tax Aspects in Serbia

Investment gold in Serbia is subject to special tax regulations. It is important to understand the difference between investing in gold and investing in silver or other precious metals, as tax rates may vary.

The purchase of investment gold that meets the prescribed conditions regarding fineness and form may have a more favorable tax treatment than other products. For sale, it is important how long you hold the gold, as there are periods after which capital gains tax is exempted.

Conclusion: Starting to Invest in Gold

Investment gold is one of the oldest and most proven ways to preserve wealth. Understanding fineness, product types and certification is crucial for making the right decision. Whether you choose bars for their lower premium, coins for global liquidity or ducats for local recognizability, it is important to buy from verified sellers and always ask for a certificate.
